History of the Contemporary Resort Rooms

Opening in 1971, Disney’s Contemporary Resort is one of two original resorts at Disney World. The history of the Contemporary Resort is fascinating!

The resort’s retro, yet futuristic look was actually  prefabricated! The Contemporary Resort’s guest rooms were assembled at a special plant off-site at about 15 rooms a day. It was overseen by designer Welton Becket and the United States Steel Corporation.

The rooms were filled with furniture and decor and then inserted into the sides of the 14 story building.

Originally, guests were supposed to be able to walk directly from Disney’s Contemporary Resort straight into the Magic Kingdom’s Tomorrowland!

Check out this historic video for the Contemporary Resort, showing off construction and how the rooms were transported.

What do you think of the rooms back then and now? How much do you think they have changed? With how the word contemporary has changed over the years, are the rooms still Contemporary?
